War in Ukraine: sending troops to "guarantee peace" divides opposition

ANALYSIS - While a debate will take place next Monday in Parliament on security in Europe, political leaders have reacted to Emmanuel Macron's proposal to create a European "reassurance" force.
In February 2024, the hypothesis of sending Western troops to Ukraine raised by Emmanuel Macron had sparked an international outcry. "Nothing should be excluded," declared the head of state, stressing that "many people who say 'never, never' today were the same people who said 'never tanks, never planes, never long-range missiles' two years ago."
A year later, has the course of history proved him right? On Monday, in Washington, after his meeting with the American president, Donald Trump , Emmanuel Macron again suggested deploying European troops in Ukraine, as part of a possible peace agreement. "They would be dissuasive forces," the Ministry of Foreign Affairs explained. "Once peace has returned, it must be guaranteed."
